The Cuffs
As with collars, dress shirt cuffs come in more varieties than you’ll ever need. Small variations are mostly a matter of preference, but larger differences reflect degrees of formality.
By understanding the basics of this style element, you can avoid any style mishaps or awkward attempts to hide your cuffs from view. French, angled, rounded, square? One button or two? With or without contrast? Questions abound when it comes to cuffs, especially when you’re customizing a dress shirt from top to bottom. At best, choosing the right cuff style for the occasion will show off your fashion savvy; at worst, an inappropriate choice will show off your lack of fashion savvy. In other words, it’s not the most important decision in your life.
When you’re trying to work your way into high society, only the unparalleled sophistication of French cuffs will do. This style is characterized by an extra fold of fabric that is fastened at the wrist with a cufflink. French cuffs represent a pretty significant step up for any guy used to buttons, but it can be easier if you know that everyone will be wearing the same. Although this style is generally reserved for the most formal of events, you can bring it down a notch with a pair of playful cufflinks and by leaving the tie at home. This will prepare you for those occasions when you want to appear dressy but not overdressed.
More than likely, your rotation of dress shirts will feature primarily (or exclusively) button cuffs. The terminology makes it pretty straightforward to set options apart: you can choose between angled (with a small triangle cut-out along the edge), rounded (with a much softer cut-out) and square (with no cut-out at all).
These styles, also referred to as barrel cuffs, come with one or two buttons. In theory the extra button equates to extra sophistication, but the distinction is largely one of personal style. Any form of button cuff will get you through work or play. When selecting cuff size, consider how it will accommodate your watch. You can add a modest amount of room on your watch-wearing hand to ensure a more comfortable fit.
