The Brown Dress Shirt
If you’re like most people, images of autumn and self-reliant woodsman probably influence your perception of brown. It isn’t a sexy colour but it can complement other colours in your dress shirt to great effect.
On the lighter side of brown, beige actually shares a lot in common with grey, a neutral colour that doesn’t do a whole lot on its own. It leaves the door open for experimentation with other colours, though you would still be well advised to keep it as an informal option; brown has yet to crossover into formal territory. Blue is the obvious choice for complementary colour, but pink also offers a sharp balance to the stabilizing influence of brown.
Deeper shades of brown work especially well with light blue, as commonly seen in check or plaid patterns. Here, the brown is so subtle that it remains undetected from far, but contributes to a more interesting dress shirt when appreciated from up close.
